What is Surrogate Pregnancy?

Surrogate pregnancy is an arrangement in which another woman (the surrogate) carries and delivers a baby for intended parents.

There are two main types:

  • Using the Intended Mother’s Eggs: When a woman is unable to carry a pregnancy herself, a surrogate carries the baby on her behalf. The embryo is created via IVF using the intended parents’ eggs and sperm, or donor eggs/sperm. The surrogate has no genetic link to the child.
  • Using Donor Eggs: Single men or male same-sex couples may use a donor egg fertilized with their sperm, and the surrogate carries the pregnancy. In this case, the surrogate is the biological mother. This method is rarely used in the U.S. today.

Who May Need Surrogacy

Surrogacy may be an option for:

  • Women without a uterus or with severe uterine damage
  • Those who have experienced multiple IVF failures or recurrent pregnancy loss
  • Women with medical conditions that make pregnancy risky
  • Single men or male same-sex couples

The Surrogacy Process

Our surrogacy journey includes:

  • Initial Consultation – Discuss goals, medical history, and eligibility
  • Legal Arrangements – Work with experienced attorneys to draft agreements
  • Medical Screening – Health evaluations for the surrogate and intended parents
  • IVF & Embryo Transfer – Create embryos and transfer to the surrogate’s uterus
  • Pregnancy Care – Regular monitoring and prenatal care
  • Delivery & Parenthood – Baby is born and placed in the care of the intended parents

Legal and Ethical Considerations

Surrogacy laws vary by state. In California, surrogacy is well-supported, and intended parents can be recognized as legal parents before the baby is born.
We work closely with legal experts to ensure that all parties’ rights and responsibilities are clearly protected.
